Proprietary Herbal Blend: Why Hidden Amounts Matter
A proprietary herbal blend is a group of ingredients listed under one total weight, with no amount shown for each. It is legal on US labels, but it stops you from comparing doses with research. The ZenCortex panel is a clear example: one 200 mg blend, 22 lines, no single amount.

The term01
What is a proprietary herbal blend?
A proprietary herbal blend is a mix of ingredients that a brand lists under a single name and a single total weight. The recipe split is treated as the brand's own.
The federal labeling rule asks for the blend's total weight on its own line, with the ingredients indented below in order of predominance by weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36 Supplement Facts). The text we read does not require a weight for each ingredient.
So a blend is allowed, and FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Dietary Supplements). The cost falls on you: you see the order, not the amounts.
Worked example02
What does a proprietary herbal blend look like on ZenCortex?
On ZenCortex, one "Proprietary Herbal Blend" weighs 200 mg per 1 mL dropper and holds 22 named lines. Chromium sits outside the blend with its own amount, 0.7 mcg.
Because lines go from most to least, line 1 (maca) can weigh at most 200 mg and line 22 (L-carnitine) at most 9.1 mg. An even split would be 200 divided by 22, or about 9.1 mg each.
The bar below cuts the blend into 22 equal parts. It is an illustration, not a measurement.
The ceilings cannot all be true together. Added up, they come to about 738 mg, nearly four times the printed 200 mg.
What you lose03
Why do hidden amounts in a blend matter?
Hidden amounts matter because research is written in milligrams. Without an amount, you cannot tell whether a line is near a studied dose or far below it.
A study might use hundreds of milligrams of one extract. A dropper that shares 200 mg across 22 lines cannot hold that much of most of them. The label does not let you check either way.
Safety works the same way. A caution about caffeine or bleeding depends on how much is present, and a blend hides it. That is why we read every line against the cited pages in our ingredients guide.

How can you judge a proprietary herbal blend?
Judge a blend by the facts the label does give: the total, the order, the count and the lines outside the blend. Then ask the seller for the rest.
| Item | Shown on ZenCortex |
|---|---|
| Blend total | Yes, 200 mg |
| Ingredient order | Yes, 22 lines |
| Each amount | No |
| Lab report | Not printed |

FAQ05
ZenCortex questions people ask
Is a proprietary herbal blend legal on a supplement label?
Yes. The federal rule lets a blend show its total weight with the ingredients listed in order of weight, and the text we read does not require each amount. Legal, though, does not mean you can check the doses.
Why do brands use a proprietary herbal blend?
Brands often say it protects the recipe, and we found no statement from this seller. For you, the effect is that doses cannot be compared across brands or with study amounts.
Can an ingredient in a blend be present in a tiny amount?
Yes. The order shows rank, not size, so a late line can be very small. On the ZenCortex panel, line 22 can weigh at most 9.1 mg, though most lines could weigh far less.
How many ingredients are in the ZenCortex blend?
The blend has 22 lines, from maca to L-carnitine. Chromium is listed separately outside the blend. The seller info page says "over 20 carefully-selected ingredients", which matches the count of chromium plus 22.
