Maca Root: What It Is and What Research Shows
Maca root is the thick, turnip-like root of a plant grown in the high Andes of Peru, sold as a powder, capsule or extract. Human research is limited to a few small trials, mostly about sexual well-being, and none looks at hearing. On the ZenCortex label, maca is the first of 22 blend lines.

The plant01
What is maca root?
Maca root is the storage root of Lepidium meyenii, a low plant grown at high altitude in Peru. It is eaten as a food there and sold elsewhere as powder, capsules and liquid extract.
A bottle of maca powder and a liquid blend are very different things. Powder is a food-like dose measured in spoons. A dropper holds 1 mL, and maca shares a 200 mg blend with 21 other lines.

The evidence02
What does research say about maca root?
Research on maca root is thin. Memorial Sloan Kettering rates the human evidence as limited, with a few small trials about sexual well-being and sexual side effects of antidepressants or menopause (MSK, Maca).
Memory effects show up in animals only, so no one can say it helps people remember.
Side effects are reported rarely but are real: changed periods, moodiness, cramps, stomach upset and poor sleep. Maca can also skew some testosterone lab tests, and people with hormone-sensitive cancers should ask their care team first (MSK, Maca).
Hearing never appears in that research.
On the bottle03
Where does maca root sit on the ZenCortex label?
Maca is the first of 22 lines in the ZenCortex "Proprietary Herbal Blend", so it weighs the most of any line. Federal rules list blend items from most to least by weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36 Supplement Facts).
The whole blend is 200 mg per 1 mL dropper. That makes 200 mg a ceiling for maca, not an amount. Because 21 other lines share the same 200 mg, maca could be far lower, and the label never says.

Should you try a maca blend?
Ask first if you take hormone therapy, have a hormone-sensitive condition, or are pregnant or nursing. The ZenCortex label says it is not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing.
Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. A supplement never replaces it, and your pharmacist can check the full label against your list.
- Read all 22 lines, not only the first.
- Do not expect a hearing result: no trial of this formula exists.

FAQ05
ZenCortex questions people ask
How much maca root is in ZenCortex?
The label does not say. It prints one 200 mg total for 22 lines. Maca is listed first, so it can weigh at most 200 mg per dropper, but it could be much lower. No amount for maca alone is printed anywhere on the bottle.
Is maca root the same as maca powder?
No. Maca powder is the dried whole root, usually measured in grams or spoons. A liquid blend shares a small total among many ingredients. The label names maca root, but without an amount you cannot compare it to powder studies.
Does maca root help with hearing or ringing in the ears?
We found no study linking maca root to hearing or tinnitus. The cited research covers sexual well-being and mood, and memory work is on animals only. Hearing trouble needs a hearing test, not a root extract.
Can maca root affect hormones or lab tests?
It may. Reports describe changed menstrual cycles and a case of raised testosterone, and maca can interfere with testosterone lab tests. Tell your clinician before any blood work if you take it.
