Maca root in ZenCortex: What the Label and the Research Say

Quick answer

Maca root is the first of 22 lines in the ZenCortex Proprietary Herbal Blend, a Peruvian root extract. Because the blend is listed by weight, maca can weigh at most 200 mg per 1 mL serving, though the label prints no amount. Research on maca is limited and mostly about sexual well-being. No study ties it to hearing.

The ingredient01

What is maca root in ZenCortex?

Maca root is a Peruvian root vegetable, and ZenCortex lists it as "Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Root Extract". It is the first line inside the 200 mg Proprietary Herbal Blend.

Maca grows in the high Andes of Peru. Memorial Sloan Kettering says it has been used there for energy, stamina, fertility and libido (MSK, Maca). The seller's info page uses the same angle and says maca "Boosts Your Energy".

Maca is a food in Peru, but the label here names an extract. An extract is a concentrated form, so the amounts used in food or powder studies do not carry over. We make no claim about how strong this extract is, because the label does not say.

The bottle itself claims only "Supports Healthy Hearing†". Maca is not described on the label as a hearing ingredient, and nothing we found links it to the ear.

Label position02

How much maca root is in ZenCortex?

The label does not say how much maca root is in a serving. It prints only the 200 mg total for the whole blend of 22 lines.

What the label order does tell us is a ceiling. Under 21 CFR 101.36, the ingredients in a proprietary blend are listed in descending order by weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36 Supplement Facts). Maca is first, so it is the heaviest line.

The heaviest line can be anywhere from about 9.1 mg up to the whole 200 mg, and no lower than that. If the blend were split evenly, each of the 22 lines would be about 9.1 mg. Maca must weigh at least that, since nothing outweighs it.

So the honest range is 9.1 mg to 200 mg per 1 mL serving. At the label's two droppers a day, that is 18.2 mg to 400 mg a day. The wide gap is the reason a printed amount would help.

Doses03

What dose of maca have studies used?

The Memorial Sloan Kettering page we cite gives no standard dose for maca (MSK, Maca). So we do not offer one.

We did not fetch a source for trial doses, so we quote none. A root powder and a concentrated extract are not the same thing.

The arithmetic is plain. Even at the 200 mg ceiling, one serving of ZenCortex holds 0.2 g. Two servings hold at most 0.4 g.

That does not make the drops weak or strong. It means a study of a few grams of powder cannot be used to predict what 0.2 g or less of an extract does. The comparison simply does not line up.

Evidence04

Does maca root help hearing, energy or memory?

No study shows that maca helps hearing. The human research on maca is a few small trials, mostly on sexual well-being.

Memorial Sloan Kettering says reviews rate the evidence as limited, and one review found maca not effective for slowing aging. The page also says memory benefits come from animal data only, not from people (MSK, Maca).

Energy is the claim the seller makes for maca. We did not find a source in our set that tests maca for energy in people, so we make no claim either way. The NIDCD adds that no supplement has been proven to relieve tinnitus (NIDCD, Tinnitus).

If you want a fair summary: maca is a traditional food with thin human evidence, and the evidence that exists is about other topics than ears.

Hearing

No study found. Nothing connects maca to the ear.

Memory

Animal data only, per Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Sexual well-being

A few small trials; reviews call the evidence limited.

Cautions05

Is maca root safe, and who should ask a doctor first?

Maca is a traditional food in Peru, but the reports on supplements include some side effects, and a few groups should ask a clinician first.

Subjective reports include altered menstrual cycles, moodiness, cramps, stomach inflammation and insomnia. One case report described prolonged bleeding and raised testosterone (MSK, Maca).

The same page says maca may interfere with testosterone lab tests, and may not be safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. People with hormone-sensitive cancers should ask a provider. ZenCortex is already not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine because you started a supplement. Bring the bottle to your pharmacist, and read ZenCortex side effects for the whole formula.

Because maca is one of 22 lines, any reaction could come from another line. Stop and call a provider if side effects appear, as NCCIH advises (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).

Marketing check06

Is the maca claim on the ZenCortex sales page backed up?

Only partly. The info page says maca "Boosts Your Energy", which matches how maca is traditionally used but is not tested in our sources.

The bottle never makes that claim. Its only health statement is "Supports Healthy Hearing†", and the dagger leads to the FDA statement that the claim has not been evaluated. FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Dietary Supplements).

The info page also says "No Stimulants". Maca is not the reason that line needs a footnote. Guarana and green tea are, because both carry caffeine, as covered on the guarana and green tea extract pages.

In context07

Where does maca fit next to the other ZenCortex ingredients?

Maca is the largest line by label order, so it is the one ingredient most likely to make up a big share of the 200 mg blend.

That is a ceiling, not a fact. The second line, grape seed extract, can weigh at most 100 mg. The third, guarana, at most 66.7 mg. By the last line, L-carnitine, the ceiling falls to 9.1 mg.

A fair way to shop is to ask what the product can show. It can show a full ingredient list. It cannot show a trial of the finished drops, or a printed amount for maca.

FAQ09

ZenCortex questions people ask

Is maca the main ingredient in ZenCortex?

Maca is the first listed line, so it is the heaviest of the 22 by label order. It can weigh at most 200 mg per serving, but the label prints no amount, so we cannot say it is the main ingredient by a known share.

Does maca root affect hearing?

No study we found shows that. Memorial Sloan Kettering describes maca research as a few small trials, mostly on sexual well-being, and the label does not claim maca helps ears. The bottle claim covers the whole formula, not maca alone.

Is the maca in ZenCortex powder or extract?

The label says root extract, not powder. That matters because trials of maca powder used larger amounts, and an extract is concentrated differently. The label does not state the extract ratio, so the two cannot be compared.

Can men or women take maca with hormone therapy?

Ask a clinician first. Memorial Sloan Kettering says maca may interfere with testosterone tests and that people with hormone-sensitive cancers should ask a provider. Bring the bottle to your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

Does maca give you energy like caffeine?

Maca itself has no caffeine. The caffeine in ZenCortex comes from guarana and green tea extract. Any energy claim for maca is traditional, and our sources contain no test of it in people.

What is the least maca a ZenCortex dropper could hold?

About 9.1 mg. Maca is listed first, so it cannot weigh less than an even split of the 200 mg blend across 22 lines, which is 200 divided by 22. The most it could weigh is 200 mg.
