Hearing and Memory: Link, Evidence and Limits
Hearing and memory are linked: older adults with hearing loss have a higher risk of developing dementia, and their memory and concentration decline faster (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults). That is a link, not a cure. It supports getting hearing loss treated. It does not show that any supplement, including ZenCortex, helps memory.

The link01
Is there a link between hearing and memory?
Yes, researchers have linked hearing loss with memory trouble. The NIA says older adults with hearing loss have a higher risk of developing dementia, and their memory and concentration decline faster (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults).
The same page says people using hearing devices had a lower risk of long-term cognitive decline than people with uncorrected loss. About one-third of older adults have hearing loss, so the link touches many families (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults).
A link means two things travel together. It does not say which one causes the other, or whether a third factor drives both. Most findings in this field are observational and cannot prove cause and effect (NIA, Preventing Alzheimer's: What Do We Know?).

Why02
Why might hearing loss affect memory?
No one has settled the reason. The NIA notes the link and the benefit of hearing devices, but it does not claim a proven cause (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults).
Researchers discuss a few ideas. These are explanations still under study, not facts from our sources.
Effort
If the brain works hard to decode speech, less is left over for remembering.
Isolation
Untreated loss can lead to isolation (NIDCD, Age-Related Hearing Loss), and fewer conversations mean less mental activity.
Shared causes
Blood pressure and diabetes show up on both lists, so a common cause may drive both (CDC, Diabetes and Hearing Loss).
The trial03
Do hearing aids protect memory?
Possibly, for some people, but the big trial gave a mixed answer. In ACHIEVE, hearing aids did not change the rate of cognitive decline across the whole group (NIH Research Matters, ACHIEVE hearing aid trial).
ACHIEVE was a randomized trial of nearly 1,000 adults aged 70 to 84 with substantial hearing loss, published in The Lancet in July 2023. Half got hearing aids with training, and half got a healthy-aging education program. They were tested every year for three years (NIH Research Matters, ACHIEVE hearing aid trial).
In a subgroup of about 250 people at higher dementia risk, hearing-aid users had almost a 50% lower rate of decline. That finding needs confirmation. Hearing-aid users also reported much better communication (NIH Research Matters, ACHIEVE hearing aid trial).
The overall result was null. The benefit showed up in one higher-risk subgroup. Good grounds to treat hearing loss, thin grounds for promises.
Risk factors04
Is hearing loss the biggest risk factor for dementia?
We cannot say that. Our sources do not rank hearing loss, so we make no claim about its share.
The 2024 Lancet Commission names 14 modifiable risk factors and says that removing them could theoretically prevent nearly half of dementias (Livingston et al., Lancet Commission 2024 (accepted version)). It lists depression, smoking, diabetes and high LDL cholesterol among midlife risks.
The NIA adds that nothing has been proven to prevent Alzheimer's disease. Blood pressure control, physical activity and cognitive training have encouraging but inconclusive evidence (NIA, Preventing Alzheimer's: What Do We Know?). Adults need at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity for general health (CDC, Adult Activity Overview).

What is normal forgetfulness and what is not?
Occasional lapses are common with age, while regular trouble with judgment, bills or conversation is a reason to talk with a doctor. The NIA draws that line (NIA, Age-related forgetfulness or dementia?).
Not everyone with memory problems has dementia. Poor hearing can also make a person seem forgetful, since a word never heard cannot be remembered.
| Area | Typical forgetfulness | Worth a doctor visit |
|---|---|---|
| Decisions | An occasional poor choice | Regularly poor judgment |
| Bills | A missed monthly payment now and then | Trouble managing monthly bills |
| Dates | Briefly losing track of the day, recalled later | Losing track of the date or season |
| Conversation | Sometimes struggling to find a word | Trouble following or joining a conversation |
| Belongings | Misplacing items now and then | Often misplacing things, unable to find them |

An everyday checklist built from NIDCD, NIA and FDA pages on hearing loss, tinnitus and hearing aids (NIDCD, Age-Related Hearing Loss) (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults) (FDA, OTC Hearing Aids). One item alone is not a diagnosis. Sudden hearing loss in one ear is an emergency (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness): see a doctor the same day.
ZenCortex06
Does ZenCortex help memory?
There is no evidence that it does. The bottle claims only "Supports Healthy Hearing†" and says nothing about memory.
The seller's info page goes further, with "Strengthens Memory" and "Sharpens Mental Acuity". No trial of ZenCortex supports those lines. The FTC says health claims generally need randomized, controlled human testing, and that testimonials are not scientific evidence (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
Two ingredients carry caffeine, guarana and green tea. That may make you feel alert, but alert is not the same as better memory. Read the ZenCortex benefits page for each claim.
What to do07
What can you do for hearing and memory today?
Get your hearing tested, treat loss if you have it, and keep up activity, sleep and social contact. The NIA lists hearing devices, sleep and diet as under study with limited evidence (NIA, Preventing Alzheimer's: What Do We Know?).
Book a hearing test
An audiologist can tell you the type and degree of loss (NIDCD, Who Can I Turn to for Help with Hearing Loss).
Ask about hearing aids
Over-the-counter models suit mild to moderate loss (FDA, OTC Hearing Aids).
Protect what you have
See protect your hearing.
Sleep and move
Adults 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours of sleep (CDC, About Sleep).
Never stop or change a dose because you started a supplement. Ask your prescriber.
FAQ08
ZenCortex questions people ask
Can untreated hearing loss cause memory loss?
It is linked with it, but our sources do not prove it causes it. The NIA says older adults with hearing loss have a higher risk of dementia and faster decline in memory and concentration (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults).
What did the ACHIEVE hearing aid trial find?
Across the whole group, no difference in cognitive decline. In a subgroup of about 250 higher-risk people, hearing-aid users had almost a 50% lower rate of decline, which needs confirmation (NIH Research Matters, ACHIEVE hearing aid trial).
Does wearing a hearing aid prevent dementia?
It has not been shown to. The NIA says a recent analysis found device users had a lower risk of long-term cognitive decline, but nothing has been proven to prevent Alzheimer's (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults) (NIA, Preventing Alzheimer's: What Do We Know?).
How do I tell forgetfulness from dementia?
Occasional lapses, like a missed payment or a lost word, are typical. Regular trouble with decisions, bills or following a conversation calls for a visit with a doctor (NIA, Age-related forgetfulness or dementia?). We cannot diagnose from a website.
What is the Lancet Commission on dementia?
It is a 2024 expert report naming 14 modifiable risk factors that could theoretically prevent nearly half of dementias if removed (Livingston et al., Lancet Commission 2024 (accepted version)). We do not quote a hearing-loss percentage because our source did not give one.
Is there a supplement proven to protect memory?
Not in our sources. The NIA says nothing has been proven to prevent Alzheimer's, and its page does not discuss supplements (NIA, Preventing Alzheimer's: What Do We Know?). Commercial brain-training apps also lack evidence of comparable effects.
Can poor hearing make me look forgetful?
Yes, it can seem that way when words are missed. That is one reason to test hearing before worrying about memory. Trouble hearing in noise, repeated requests and a loud TV are the NIA's signs to see a doctor (NIA, Hearing loss in older adults).
Does caffeine in ZenCortex improve memory?
No source we hold shows that. Guarana and green tea carry caffeine, and the FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount most adults tolerate (FDA, How Much Caffeine Is Too Much?). The label prints no caffeine amount, so we cannot say how much a dropper holds.
