Ototoxic Medications: Medicines Known to Affect Hearing
Ototoxic medications are drugs that can damage the inner ear and cause hearing loss, ringing or balance trouble. ASHA says more than 200 prescription and over-the-counter products are known to do this. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Ask your prescriber about the ear risk instead.

The basics01
What are ototoxic medications?
Ototoxic medications are medicines that can harm the sensory cells of the inner ear. The result can be hearing loss, ringing or balance problems (ASHA, Ototoxic Medications).
ASHA counts more than 200 prescription and over-the-counter drugs and chemicals in this group. Some effects fade after the drug stops, and others are permanent.
Most people who take these medicines are never harmed. The list matters because the drugs are often needed, and the risk is something to watch, not a reason to refuse treatment.
Drug classes02
Which medicines are ototoxic?
The best-known ototoxic medicines are certain antibiotics, cancer drugs, loop diuretics, aspirin and quinine. ASHA sorts them by whether the harm is permanent or temporary (ASHA, Ototoxic Medications).
| Class | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Aminoglycoside antibiotics | Gentamicin | Can be permanent |
| Platinum chemotherapy | Cisplatin, carboplatin | Can be permanent |
| Salicylates | Aspirin | Often temporary |
| Antimalarial | Quinine | Often temporary |
| Loop diuretics | Water pills | Often temporary |
NIDCD adds that high doses of some anti-inflammatory pain relievers, antidepressants and antimalarials are linked with ringing (NIDCD, Tinnitus). This table is not a full list.
What to do03
What should you do if you take an ototoxic medication?
Keep taking the medicine as prescribed and talk to the prescriber about ear checks. Never stop or change a dose because of a list you read online.
The four steps below follow the ASHA advice.
- 01
Ask about ear risk
Before a new course, ask your prescriber whether the medicine can affect hearing or balance, and what the benefit is for you.
- 02
Get a baseline test
ASHA advises a hearing check with an audiologist before treatment, so later changes can be measured against it.
- 03
Report changes fast
Ringing is usually the first sign. Tell your prescriber about new ringing, muffled sound or dizziness right away.
- 04
Keep sound moderate
Loud noise during treatment can add to the harm, so keep headphones and events at a level where you can still talk.

Are herbal supplements ototoxic?
ASHA's page does not list herbal supplements as ototoxic, and we found no source tying any ZenCortex line to ear damage. That is not proof of safety, only a gap in the evidence.
The bigger point is mixing. ZenCortex lists 22 herbal and amino acid lines, and the label says to consult a physician before use, especially with a medication. If you take any of the drugs above, ask first.
Ringing, muffled sound or dizziness while on a medicine needs a clinician, not a supplement. Sudden hearing loss in one ear is an emergency that needs same-day care (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness).

FAQ05
ZenCortex questions people ask
Can over-the-counter pain relievers be ototoxic?
Yes. ASHA lists aspirin and other salicylates as medicines with mostly temporary ear effects, and NIDCD links high doses of some anti-inflammatory pain relievers to ringing. Ask a pharmacist about the safe amount for you, and do not change a dose alone.
Is hearing loss from ototoxic medications reversible?
It depends on the drug. ASHA says some effects reverse after the medicine stops and others are permanent, notably those tied to certain antibiotics and platinum cancer drugs. Early reporting gives the prescriber the most options.
How soon do ototoxic medications cause ringing?
ASHA says ringing is usually the first sign, but it gives no fixed timeline. Report any new ringing, muffled sound or dizziness to your prescriber right away, because earlier action may limit damage.
Should I get a hearing test before a risky medication?
ASHA advises a baseline assessment by an audiologist before treatment with ototoxic drugs, with periodic tests during treatment. Ask your prescriber to arrange this when the medicine carries an ear warning.
