How Does Hearing Work? The Ear From Outer to Inner

Quick answer

Hearing works as a relay: sound waves enter the outer ear, shake the eardrum, pass through three tiny middle-ear bones, and set off hair cells in the inner ear. Those cells turn the motion into electrical signals, and the hearing nerve carries them to the brain, which makes sense of them.

How does hearing work, step by step?

Hearing works in six hand-offs, from air movement to a signal your brain reads as sound.

The outer ear funnels sound waves to the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates, and three tiny bones pass and boost that motion into the fluid-filled cochlea. Hair cells there bend and fire signals, and the auditory nerve carries them to the brain (NIDCD, How Do We Hear?).

Tap a number on the map to read about each stop.

  1. Outer ear

The pinna and ear canal catch sound waves and guide them inward. Wax lives here and can block the canal.

  2. Eardrum

A thin membrane that vibrates with the sound.

  3. Three tiny bones

The malleus, incus and stapes pass the movement along and make it stronger.

  4. Cochlea

A fluid-filled spiral. Hair cells near the wide end sense high pitches, those nearer the center sense low ones.

  5. Auditory nerve

Carries the electrical signal out of the inner ear.

  6. Brain

Turns the signal into words, music and warnings.

Where can hearing go wrong?

Hearing can go wrong at any stop, but the inner ear hair cells are where long-term noise and aging do most of their harm.

Loud sound at or above 85 dBA, over long or repeated exposure, can cause noise-induced loss, and some of it fades within 16 to 48 hours while lasting damage may remain (NIDCD, Noise-Induced Hearing Loss). Age-related loss is gradual and usually affects both ears, so people often do not notice it (NIDCD, Age-Related Hearing Loss).

Can drops change how hearing works?

No supplement has been shown to change how the ear works, and ZenCortex is no exception.

The bottle says "Supports Healthy Hearing†" and the FDA statement says the claim has not been evaluated. Nothing in the path above is something a dropper of herbs is known to repair. If you want to see what is in each dropper, read the ingredients.

How can I look after the hearing path?

To look after your hearing path, turn noise down, leave wax alone and get a test when speech starts to blur.

  • Use earplugs or earmuffs for loud places.
  • Do not push swabs into the canal.
  • Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs a doctor the same day (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness).

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a pharmacist if a drug is known to affect the ear (ASHA, Ototoxic Medications). More in protect your hearing, tinnitus basics and hearing loss and aging.

FAQ01

ZenCortex questions people ask

What are the three bones in the ear called?

They are the malleus, incus and stapes, often called the hammer, anvil and stirrup. They sit in the middle ear and pass the eardrum's vibration to the cochlea, making it stronger on the way (NIDCD, How Do We Hear?).

What do hair cells do in the cochlea?

Hair cells turn movement into electrical signals. When sound waves ripple through the cochlear fluid, tiny hairs on the cells bend, and that bending opens channels that start a signal along the hearing nerve (NIDCD, How Do We Hear?).

Does earwax affect how hearing works?

Yes, when there is too much. Wax normally guards the canal, but excess can harden and block it, causing a plugged feeling and muffled hearing. Do not dig it out with swabs; check with a provider first (MedlinePlus, Ear Wax).
