Hearing Supplement Vitamins: What Research Links to Hearing

Quick answer

Hearing supplement vitamins are vitamins and minerals sold for ear health. The NIDCD says vitamins and other supplements are often advertised for tinnitus, but none has been shown to work. ZenCortex lists no vitamin at all: its only mineral is chromium at 0.7 mcg (NIDCD, Tinnitus).

Does ZenCortex contain any hearing supplement vitamins?

No. The ZenCortex Supplement Facts panel names no vitamin. Outside the blend it prints one mineral, chromium (as chromium picolinate) at 0.7 mcg, which is 2% of the Daily Value.

Everything else is a 200 mg blend of 22 lines, mostly herbs and amino acids. Vitamin-free is not a flaw. It simply means vitamin advertising for other products does not describe this label.

What does research say about vitamins and minerals for hearing?

For tinnitus, the evidence is poor. The NIDCD says vitamins, herbal extracts and dietary supplements are often advertised as remedies, but none has been shown effective (NIDCD, Tinnitus).

Zinc is the best-tested mineral. A Cochrane review of three trials with 209 adults found no evidence that oral zinc improves tinnitus, and rated the evidence quality as very low (Cochrane, Zinc supplements for tinnitus).

We did not fetch authoritative pages on B12, folate, magnesium or vitamins A, C and E, so we make no claim about them. Be wary of any label that does.

What we can and cannot say
NutrientOur finding
Zinc and tinnitusNo evidence of benefit in a Cochrane review
B12, folate, magnesium, A, C, ENo authoritative page fetched
Chromium in ZenCortexNo study ties it to hearing

Is correcting a deficiency different from taking extra vitamins?

Yes. Correcting a low level found on a blood test is medical care. Taking extra of something you already have enough of is a guess.

A clinician can tell the two apart, and only a test can. Do not assume a hearing problem means a missing vitamin. Ear wax, infection and medicines come first (MedlinePlus, Ear Wax).

The NIH fact sheet sets an Adequate Intake of 25 to 35 mcg of chromium a day for adults aged 19 to 50, so 0.7 mcg is a small slice (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet).

How do you check a vitamin label for hearing claims?

Read the Supplement Facts panel, not the front. A named vitamin has an amount and a Daily Value; a blend hides the split.

Ask your pharmacist about anything you take, and keep taking prescribed medicine (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). For more, see hearing loss and aging, how hearing supplement ads work and supplements and medicines. Our post on ear health supplements adds more.

FAQ01

ZenCortex questions people ask

Does zinc help ringing in the ears?

A Cochrane review of three trials found no evidence that oral zinc improves tinnitus in adults, with very low quality evidence. Ask a clinician before taking zinc, since doses on labels vary (Cochrane, Zinc supplements for tinnitus).

Can a vitamin deficiency cause hearing loss?

We did not fetch an authoritative source on that, so we do not claim it. A clinician can test for deficiencies and check more common causes, such as ear wax, infection or medicines, first.

Is a multivitamin a hearing supplement?

Not unless the maker says so on the label, and even then the claim has no proof behind it. The NIDCD says no vitamin or supplement has been proven to relieve tinnitus (NIDCD, Tinnitus).

Is chromium a hearing vitamin?

No, chromium is a trace mineral, and no study we found ties it to hearing. ZenCortex prints 0.7 mcg of it, about one fiftieth of the 35 mcg Adequate Intake for men aged 19 to 50 (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet).
