Green Tea Extract in Supplements: Catechins and Cautions

Quick answer

Green tea extract is a concentrate of green tea leaf, rich in catechins and carrying some caffeine. NCCIH says liver injury is uncommon but reported, mainly with extract tablets or capsules. ZenCortex lists it as line 7 of its blend, so it can weigh at most 28.6 mg per dropper (NCCIH, Green Tea).

What is green tea extract in a supplement?

Green tea extract is a concentrated form of the leaf, standardized to deliver catechins, the plant compounds that give tea much of its character. It also carries caffeine.

The ZenCortex info page ties green tea to blood flow in the ear. The Supplement Facts panel names it Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract and gives no amount for it alone.

NCCIH says definite conclusions cannot be reached for most uses. Catechins and caffeine may have a modest effect on weight, and extracts slightly lowered total and LDL cholesterol. Hearing is not on the list (NCCIH, Green Tea).

Is green tea extract safe for the liver?

Mostly yes, with a rare exception. Liver injury from green tea is uncommon but has been reported, and the reports center on extract tablets or capsules, not the drink (NCCIH, Green Tea).

NCCIH also notes that people with a certain immune-gene variant, estimated at 5 to 15 percent of Americans, appear more susceptible. Most people do not know their status, which is a fair reason to be careful with concentrated products.

Two medicine notes appear on the page: high doses can lower blood levels of nadolol, and the extract can lower atorvastatin levels. Ask your pharmacist if either is yours.

Does green tea extract count as a stimulant?

Yes, in the sense that it contains caffeine. That matters because the ZenCortex info page says "No Stimulants", while the blend also lists guarana.

FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally linked with harm for most adults, but sensitivity varies (FDA, How Much Caffeine Is Too Much?). Neither the green tea line nor the guarana line shows a caffeine amount, so you cannot add them up.

How much green tea extract is in ZenCortex?

Nobody can say from the label. The blend totals 200 mg for 22 lines, listed from most to least by weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36 Supplement Facts).

Line 7 can weigh at most 200 divided by 7, or 28.6 mg per dropper. An even split is about 9.1 mg. Twice a day, the ceiling is 57.2 mg and the even split is 18.2 mg, a threefold spread.

FAQ01

ZenCortex questions people ask

How is green tea extract different from drinking green tea?

Extract concentrates the leaf into a small dose, so one dropper can hold more catechins than a sip would suggest. NCCIH reports no safety concerns for the drink in adults, while rare liver injury reports involve extract tablets or capsules (NCCIH, Green Tea).

Does green tea extract have caffeine?

Yes, green tea and its extracts carry caffeine. NCCIH states that green tea contains caffeine, and FDA says labels matter because caffeine appears in many supplements. ZenCortex does not print a caffeine amount for any line (FDA, How Much Caffeine Is Too Much?).

Can green tea extract interact with a cholesterol medicine?

It can. NCCIH reports that the extract can lower atorvastatin levels, and high doses lowered nadolol. Show the ZenCortex label to a pharmacist if you take either medicine, and do not change a dose yourself.
